Lottery terms and conditions
The rules of the Shore Kirk Weekly Lottery, in plain English. Please read them before you join. Last updated: 13 October 2026.
1. Definitions
In these terms:
- "We", "us", "our" and "the Society" mean Kilmun, Strone & Ardentinny: The Shore Kirk (Church of Scotland), Scottish charity SC003410, 34 Sandhaven, Sandbank, Dunoon, Argyll PA23 8QN.
- "The Lottery" means the Shore Kirk Weekly Lottery. Each weekly draw is a separate lottery.
- "Promoter" means the member of the Society appointed by the Kirk Session to be responsible for promoting the Lottery.
- "Player" or "you" means a person who has joined the Lottery and whose entries have been accepted.
- "Entry" means one chance in one weekly draw, identified by a unique six-digit Lottery Number.
- "Draw" means the weekly selection of winning Lottery Numbers. "Superdraw" means a Draw with an additional prize, as described in section 7.
- "Proceeds" means the total money paid for Entries into a Draw.
- "Working day" means Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays in Scotland.
2. Promoter and licensing
The Lottery is promoted by the Society for the purposes of the Society and is registered as a small society lottery with Argyll and Bute Council (Licensing Section, Kilmory, Lochgilphead PA31 8RT) under Schedule 11 of the Gambling Act 2005.
The Promoter is the member of the Society responsible for the promotion of the Lottery. The Promoter's name and the Society's address are printed on every ticket confirmation, and the Promoter can be contacted at the address above or at [email protected].
We run the Lottery within the limits that apply to small society lotteries, including that Proceeds of a single Draw will not exceed £20,000, total Proceeds in a calendar year will not exceed £250,000, no single prize will exceed £25,000, and at least 20% of Proceeds will be applied to the purposes of the Society.
We do not use an external lottery manager.
3. Eligibility
- You must be 18 or over to join or play. We will not sell any Entry to anyone under 18.
- You must live in Great Britain (England, Scotland or Wales). The Gambling Act 2005 does not apply in Northern Ireland, so we cannot accept players who live there, or outside Great Britain.
- You may hold one Lottery account only, in your own name, with a maximum of 10 Entries per Draw.
- Members of the Kirk Session who oversee a Draw, the Promoter, and lottery volunteers who handle Entries may not play.
- We will check your age and identity when you join. We may ask for proof of age and address (for example a passport or driving licence and a recent bill) at any time, including before a prize is paid.
- If you are found to be under 18, or otherwise not eligible, your Entries will be cancelled, any money paid refunded, and any prize forfeited.
4. How to enter and entry numbers
- You can join online through our website, by completing a paper form, or in person with a lottery volunteer.
- You choose 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 Entries per weekly Draw.
- Each Entry is given a unique six-digit Lottery Number. Your Lottery Numbers stay the same while you continue to play.
- Within 7 days of your first payment we will send you a confirmation by email (or by post if you ask). This confirmation is your ticket. It shows the name of the Society, the price of each Entry, the Promoter's name and the Society's address, and the dates of the Draws you are entered into.
- Your first Draw is the first Friday after your payment has been received and your age has been confirmed, provided this happens before midnight on the Wednesday before that Draw.
- Entries are personal to you and cannot be transferred, sold or given to another person.
5. Price and payment
- Each Entry costs £1 per Draw.
- Payment is taken monthly, in advance, on or shortly after the 1st of each month, for every Friday Draw in that month (four or five Draws).
- You can pay by Direct Debit or by debit card. We do not accept credit cards, and we do not offer credit of any kind.
- Payments are processed by our third-party payment provider. We never see or store your full card number.
- You may set a monthly spending limit (£5, £10, £15, £25 or £50). We will not collect more than your limit in any month; if your limit means you cannot be entered into every Draw in a month, your Entries for the last Draw(s) of that month are not made.
- If a payment fails, your Entries are not included in any Draw until payment has been received. We will tell you and will not try to collect a failed payment more than once.
- Only Entries that have been paid for in full are included in a Draw.
6. Draw procedure and frequency
- A Draw takes place every Friday at 8pm, including weeks with public holidays.
- Entries close at midnight on the Wednesday before each Draw.
- Winning Lottery Numbers are selected by a computer-based random number generator from all paid Entries for that Draw. Every Entry has an equal chance of winning. A single Entry can win only one prize in each Draw.
- Every Draw is overseen by two members of the Kirk Session who are not involved in selling Entries. They sign a record of the Draw, which we keep for at least three years.
- Results are published on our website by 12 noon on the Saturday after each Draw.
- If a Draw cannot take place at the scheduled time for reasons beyond our control, it will take place as soon as reasonably possible, and we will publish the new time on our website.
7. Prizes and how they are paid
In each weekly Draw, 50% of the Proceeds forms the prize fund, which is divided as follows: 1st prize 40%; 2nd prize 20%; 3rd prize 15%; 4th prize 10%; 5th prize 5%; and five runner-up prizes of 2% each. Prize amounts are rounded down to the nearest penny, and any remainder is applied to the purposes of the Society.
Superdraws take place on the first Friday of March, June, September and December. In a Superdraw, one additional Superdraw prize equal to 10% of that Draw's Proceeds is awarded, so 60% of that Draw's Proceeds is paid in prizes.
Prizes are paid automatically, in pounds sterling, by bank transfer to the account from which you pay, within 10 working days of the Draw. Where this is not possible, we will contact you to arrange payment by bank transfer to another account in your name, or by cheque to your registered address. No cash alternative or non-cash prizes are offered. We may ask for proof of identity, age and address before paying any prize of £100 or more.
8. Claiming prizes and unclaimed prizes
You do not need to claim a prize. If we are unable to pay a prize, we will make reasonable efforts to contact you by email, post and, if you have given it, telephone.
If you believe you have won but have not been contacted within 3 working days of the results being published, please email [email protected].
Any prize that cannot be paid within 180 days of the Draw, despite our reasonable efforts, will be forfeited and applied to the purposes of the Society. Forfeited prizes are never added to the prize fund of a later Draw.
9. Winner publicity and anonymity
We publish the winning Lottery Numbers for every Draw. We will only publish a winner's initial and town (for example "Mrs M, Strone") if the winner agrees. We will never publish a winner's full name, address, photograph or prize amount alongside their name without their written consent. You can ask to remain anonymous at any time, including after a result has been published, and we will remove your details within 5 working days.
10. Cancelling entries and refunds
- You can cancel your membership, or reduce your Entries, at any time by emailing [email protected], writing to the Lottery Office at the address above, or telling a lottery volunteer.
- Cancellation takes effect from the next Draw for which Entries have not closed. We will refund in full any money you have paid for Draws that have not yet taken place, within 10 working days.
- You may also cancel a Direct Debit through your bank. Please let us know as well, so that we can close your account.
- Money paid for a Draw that has already taken place cannot be refunded.
- We may cancel your Entries and refund any unused payments if you break these terms, if we reasonably believe you are not eligible, or if we reasonably believe that playing is causing you harm.
- If we stop running the Lottery, we will give you at least 28 days' notice and refund any payments for Draws that will not take place.
11. Responsible play, limits and self-exclusion
- We want the Lottery to be enjoyed as a way of supporting our parish. Never spend money you cannot afford to lose.
- You may set a monthly spending limit or reduce your Entries at any time; reductions take effect from your next payment. Increases to your Entries or limit take effect after a cooling-off period of 7 days.
- You may take a break for 1 week, 1 month or 3 months, or self-exclude for 6 months, 1 year, 2 years or 5 years. During a self-exclusion we will stop your Entries and payments, refund any payments for future Draws, stop all lottery communications, and refuse any new Entry from you. A self-exclusion cannot be shortened.
- Full details, and links to free support including the National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133), are on our responsible gambling page.
12. Rollovers
There are no rollovers. All prizes in every Draw are paid out to that Draw's winners. No part of the prize fund of one Draw is carried forward to any later Draw.
13. Proceeds and good causes percentages
The Proceeds of each normal weekly Draw are applied as follows: 50% to prizes, 40% to the purposes of the Society and 10% to the expenses of running the Lottery (payment processing, registration fees, postage and printing). In Superdraw weeks the split is 60% prizes, 30% to the purposes of the Society and 10% expenses. In every Draw, more than the legal minimum of 20% is applied to the Society's purposes.
Money applied to the Society's purposes supports the work of the Shore Kirk in its parish, including the upkeep of the church and hall, community groups, pastoral visiting and local outreach. We publish declared Proceeds, prizes, expenses and the amount applied to good causes on our Where your money goes page, and submit returns to Argyll and Bute Council as required by law.
14. Complaints
If you are unhappy with any aspect of the Lottery, please follow our complaints procedure. Contact [email protected] or write to the Lottery Office at the address above. We will acknowledge your complaint within 2 working days and aim to resolve it within 10 working days. If you remain unhappy, you can ask for a review by the Kirk Session and then contact Argyll and Bute Council, as set out on our complaints page.
15. Data protection
We use your personal data to run the Lottery, check your age and eligibility, collect payments, pay prizes, support responsible play and meet our legal duties. We never sell your data. Full details are in our privacy policy.
16. Changes to the terms
We may change these terms, for example to reflect changes in the law or in how we run the Lottery. We will give you at least 28 days' notice of any significant change by email or post, and publish the updated terms on our website. If you do not accept a change, you may cancel and receive a refund for any future Draws you have paid for.
17. Governing law
These terms are governed by the law of Scotland, and the Scottish courts have jurisdiction over any dispute. If you live in England or Wales, you may also bring proceedings in the courts there.
